Highlight Herb: Skullcap, Genus: Scutellaria
I would like to introduce a very unique herb, (with a very intimidating name, I know). But I assure you, that in spite of the strangeness of the name, this is a very useful and amazing plant.
First off, it is a nervine sedative. This means that this is a relaxing plant. It is known as a sleep aid. Being a nervine, it provides nourishment and support for the central nervous system, including the brain and nerves. It is a stress reducer and calmer. Hence skullcap is an excellent pain reliever, especially for pain caused by tension, or tensing of the nerves. It’s effect can last approx. 12 hours long. I have found this herb to be extremely effective in relaxing muscle cramps and spasms.
Skullcap has Antiviral and Antibacterial effects. It has Anti-inflammatory Anticancer compounds. Some test-tube studies suggest that American skullcap may have neuroprotective properties, potentially safeguarding against diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.
The dried roots of the plant have long been used as a traditional Chinese medicine to treat: Diarrhea, Insomnia, Dysentery, High Blood Pressure, Hemorrhaging, Respiratory Infections, Inflammation.
Please use with caution. Do not attempt to operate a motor vehicle while taking this herb. Also please check with your doctor or care provider about effects this may have on any existing health conditions or reactions to any medication you may be taking. Do not take with blood thinners. Do not take internally if you are pregnant or nursing. Do not use with alcohol or anything that has sedative properties. Do not take if you have any condition which may affect liver function. Please reserch, before attempting to use this herb for any condition.
This herb may be used as a supplement (which you can buy at your local health food store), or used as a tincture. With a tincture you can use a drop or two under the tongue per dosage, or use topically. A Skullcap tincture used topically is very effective for sore muscles and painful joints. Or you can make an herbal oil and use topically as a salve.
I will demonstrate how to make tinctures, and salves in later posts. Blessings to all!
